Update: falling satellite could impact eastern U.S.

In an ever-changing scenario, NASA now says that a decaying UARS satellite could impact the eastern United States sometime late Friday or early Saturday. Because of variability in the satellite's rate of descent, pinpointing exactly where it will fall will be difficult until the final two hours, according to NASA and other sources monitoring the satellite's descent.

The probabilities of an eastern U.S. impact are low, but if the satellite re-enters the Earth's atmosphere at a slightly later time than predicted, the debris field could include the eastern U.S. Latest estimates place the time of re-entry at about 9pm. Friday, eastern time.

The UARS satellite was launched in order to study the upper atmosphere back in 1991. It will be one the largest man made objects to tumble back to Earth in more than 30 years. The satellite is about the size of a bus, and a number of sizable fragments are expected to survive the fiery descent through the earth's atmosphere and reach the ground. The path of the affected areas is expected to be about 500 miles long.
