Barzan, Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRP.org) – President Barzani received U.S. Ambassador to Iraq James Jeffery and Commander of U.S. Forces in Iraq General Austin today to discuss recent political developments in Iraq and relations between Erbil and Baghdad.
A number of pressing political issues were raised in the meeting including the question of U.S. military presence in Iraq post 2011 for training purposes, recent tensions between Erbil and Baghdad, and the political process in Iraq in general.
President Barzani said that in order to make progress and ease tensions all sides must abide by the Iraqi Constitution and honour the agreements that exist among Iraq’s political blocks, reiterating that the Kurdistan block is committed to the Constitution and the agreements but added that Iraqi Prime Minister’s State of Law block has reneged on its commitments.
Ambassador Jeffery reaffirmed U.S. commitment to the democratic process in Iraq, saying that his government is for a democratic, federal and united Iraq.
