America declared a formal veto against the declaration of a Palestinian state

The United States declared explicitly for the first time on Thursday night that it would use its veto power against the Palestinian attempt to get the full membership of the United Nations, prompting an immediate rejection by the Palestinians, who have vowed to move forward in their attempt.

Said George Mitchell, former U.S. envoy to the Middle East: The opportunity is weak to discourage Palestinian leaders from seeking full membership in the United Nations for the state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, a move that requires a vote in the Security Council, where the United States enjoys veto power.

Diplomats said it was not clear yet what he will do when the Palestinians opened the General Assembly of United Nations session on 19 September.

The Palestinians seek for a "non-member State," which requires a simple majority of the members of the Assembly's 193 countries.

Victoria Nuland said a spokeswoman for the U.S. State Department, told reporters in her statement the daily "The United States opposes the move in New York by the Palestinians to try to establish a state." She added: "It's nothing to put a vote in the Security Council of the United Nations, the United States would use its veto."
