Iraqi Cabinet approves and refers Oil and Gas Law to Parliament

The Iraqi Cabinet approved today the draft Oil and Gas Law and referred it to the Parliament for endorsement.

In a statement by the government spokesman, the draft law shall be the only version, abrogating all previous ones.

Disputed arose when the Parliamentary Oil and Energy Commission submitted a proposal for the draft law in 17 August 2011, which led to the departure of National Alliance members from the session.

State of Law MP Hassan Al-Sinaid called upon the parliament to refer all laws to the cabinet before discussing them.

National Alliance MP Mohammed al-Sayhood described the parliamentary draft law as "politicized" that lacks professionalism and technical aspects.

The law shall be discussed after Eid festivities.

Sayhood told Aswat al-Iraq that "the oil and gas law is important because it is the only source to build Iraqi economy and infrastructure".

"The law should take into consideration the just distribution of the wealth," he added.
