July 14th Pentagon to Unveil First Cybersecurity Strategy
U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn will unveil the Pentagon's first cybersecurity strategy in a July 14 speech at the National Defense University in Washington.
The proposal will refine for military commanders a broad White House policy that equates such cyber attacks with armed assaults on the nation, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said in an e-mail.
"The strategy establishes clear objectives for taking advantage of the opportunities that exist in cyberspace, while mitigating the threats to our military networks," he said. "It also highlights the importance of being able to operate with speed and agility, while continually innovating and adapting to a dynamic environment."
The White House on May 17 announced that cyber attacks ranked with military threats against the nation and "when warranted, the U.S. will respond to hostile acts in cyberspace as we would with any other threats to our country."
The White House International Strategy for Cyberspace calls for the U.S. government to work with other countries on standards to protect intellectual property, prevent theft of private information and ensure cooperation among law enforcement agencies.
The strategy states that the U.S. reserves "the right to use all necessary means -- diplomatic, informational, military and economic -- as appropriate and consistent with international law" to defend itself and its allies.
