Arabs seek to get the Palestinians to full UN membership
Ramallah, West Bank, A draft statement for a meeting in Qatar for Follow-up Committee of the Arab League said on Thursday that the university would make the request on behalf of the Palestinians full membership at the United Nations.
The statement issued by the Committee, which Reuters obtained a copy of "Arab Monitoring Committee decided at the conclusion of its meeting in Doha, to go to the United Nations to demand recognition of the State of Palestine with its capital in East Jerusalem and the move to apply for full membership in the UN and to mobilize international support for this step in both the General General and the Security Council."
The statement gave no timeframe but Palestinian officials have said they want to demand the time of the General Assembly of the United Nations in September.
The Palestinian delegates participated in the meeting of the Monitoring Committee that the Arab League appointed a committee to set up appointments.
And denounced the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a speech later on Thursday with such unilateral steps.
Netanyahu said, "If they (the Palestinians) really want peace they must sit down to negotiate without preconditions. No alternative to negotiations. Unilateral steps will not make peace soon and will not achieve any solution."
In Washington, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry was asked about the proposal to grant the Palestinians full membership status at the United Nations, "we do not believe that attempts to resolve the final status issues in international forums like the UN can achieve durable peace sought by the two sides and the United States."
The spokesman said, "should the Israelis and the Palestinians overcome their differences in direct negotiations."
