Kurds to meet in Baghdad over security ministry debate

Baghdad, The Kurdistan Blocs Coalition (KBC) will meet in Baghdad on Tuesday to discuss its position in the ongoing debate over the candidates nominated for the three unallocated federal security ministries.

Ahead of the proposed meeting, coalition spokesman Muayyid al-Tayyeb told AKnews that the KBC is not opposed to any candidate who is professional, honest and not covered by de-Baathification procedures.

Tayyeb said that the coalition will be keen to uphold the political consensus in voting for the candidates. Tayyeb said that the coalition will be keen to uphold the political consensus in voting for the candidates.

Parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi confirmed on Thursday that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has presented a second batch of nominees for the key security ministries that have remained unallocated since the vote of confidence for his government was given in December 2010.

Nujaifi did not say when parliament will vote on the three candidates - Sadun al-Dulaymi for defense, Tawfiq al-Yasiri for interior, and Riyad Ghrayb for national security affairs.

Major parlaimentary force, the al-Iraqiya list, led by former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, responded swiftly to Nujaifi's statement and announced its refusal to vote for the candidates nominated by Maliki.

Al-Iraqiyya has been critical of the way Maliki dismissed its candidate for the Interior Ministry – Salim Dalli, and instead nominated Tawfiq al-Yasiri.
