Iraq-Jordan railway agreement signed
Baghdad, The railway between Baghdad and Aqaba, Jordan, got one step closer to realization today, with the signing of a preliminary agreement between the governments of the two countries, the Iraqi Transport Ministry announced today.
The project, which the ministry hopes will strengthen commercial ties with Jordan, involves the construction of a connecting spur, 150 km long. The trains will travel up to speeds of 140 kilometers per hour.
Spokesperson for the General Railways Company, Jawad al Kharsan, told AKnews that the Jordanian delegation will today discuss the logistics for the completion of the railway.
He said: "It will be one the most important lines owned by Iraq. We are working on the Qaem-Syria line so that it reaches Traibil, then we can get on with building the Baghdad-Aqaba line
"The Jordanian side expressed its desire for the railway to pass through the border crossing at Traibil-Karama."
The Directorate of Railways has confirmed this month that its financial takings reached IQD1.6 billion in March. Iraq's Transport Ministry announced that the next round of railway licensing will be launched soon.
Iraq is looking to build an integrated transport network with countries in the region, to link the Mediterranean, the Arabic Gulf and East Asia.

Railways Co.: Iraqi - Syrian - Turkish railway stopped for financial disputes
Baghdad, The Directorate of the Iraqi railway said Saturday that the train allocated for the transport of passengers from Iraq to Syria and Turkey was stopped because the Syrian side imposed an entry visa of 50 $ on every citizen.
Directorate spokesman Jawad al-Kharasani told AKnews that the line transport the passengers twice a week to Turkey, and it launches from Mosul station and passes by 150 km in the Syrian lands and then continues heading to Turkey after a transit stop in Syria.
"The Syrian side forced all the passengers to pay the visa entry although the train stops for a few minutes in the Syrian territory and then re-launches again. The Iraqi side is currently negotiating with the Syrian side to reduce the entry and exit visa to 10$ instead of 50.
The Directorate of Railways has confirmed this month that its financial imports reached in March to one billion and 600 million Iraqi dinars in the various activities of the company that include transporting goods and passengers, as Iraq's transport ministry revealed that the railway licensing round will be launched soon.
Iraq seeks to build an integrated transport link with the regional countries through the dry channel that links the Mediterranean and the Arabic Gulf and East Asia, and it is the biggest transfer channel in the world.
