Finally ~ Iraqi parliament names 3 VPs, Tariq al-Hashimi, Adel Abdul Mahdi, and Khudair al-Khuzaie

Iraqi parliament voted on Thursday for three candidates selected for vice presidents of Iraq’s presidency.

Parliament named Tariq al-Hashimi from Iraqiya Bloc, Adel Abdul Mahdi from National Alliance and Khudair al-Khuzaie from State of law Coalition with the majority of votes.

Iraq MPs approve three ceremonial vice-presidents

Iraqi lawmakers finally broke a prolonged deadlock yesterday and approved three politicians to the ceremonial role of vice-president.The three, each of whom represents a major faction in Iraq’s power-sharing government, will serve as deputies for President Jalal Talabani, who represents a fourth bloc.“Parliament members have unanimously approved three vice-presidents in one package,” a parliamentary official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. He did not say how many MPs voted.

The trio are former vice-presidents Tareq Al Hashemi and Adel Abdel Mahdi, and former education minister Khudayr Al Khuzaie.

Hashemi is a member of the Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc, Mahdi is part of the Shia religious Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council, while Khuzaie is from Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki’s Shia Dawa party.

Talabani is a member of the Kurdistania alliance, the main Kurdish grouping.

Lawmakers had been deadlocked on the issue of vice-presidents since the formation of Iraq’s national unity government in December, more than nine months after March 2010 elections.
