17/05/2011Barzani invited to decisive security ministries meeting in Baghdad
Baghdad, Kurdistan’s president, Massoud Barzani, has been invited to an imminent meeting of political bloc leaders in Baghdad to discuss the candidacies for the three security ministries, said a State of Law Coalition (SLC) deputy on Tuesday.
Saad al-Muttalibi told AKnews that the bloc leaders will also discuss the terms of Barzani’s initiative that led the signing of the Erbil agreements between the political blocs prior to the formation of the current ‘unity’ government in December 2010.
According to Barzani's power-sharing initiative, the Ministries of the Interior and National Security were to be allocated to the Shia blocs, and the Defense Ministry would be the share of the Sunni lists.
So far, each of the blocs has rejected the other’s candidates for the said ministries amid accusations of inefficiency and partiality.
Earlier this month, PM Maliki submitted his nominees for the three ministries without having discussed them with the political blocs, including his own list, the National Coalition (NC).
On Thursday, Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi was once more obliged to postpone a parliamentary vote for the candidates due to the lack of political consensus.
“An emergency session will be held soon to grant confidence to the candidates nominated for the security positions,” Muttalibi said today.
Maliki has personally headed the three key security ministries that have remained unallocated since the vote of confidence was given to his incomplete line-up of ministers in December 2010.
