Arab League postpones Baghdad Summit to March ''12

CAIRO, The Arab League announced Thursday postponing its 23rd Summit, previously slated to take place in Baghdad, to March 2012, with Iraq still having the option to host it at that date.

The announcement came after consultations League Chief Amr Moussa had with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari earlier today.

A statement by the Arab body clarified that decision to postpone the Summit was taken based on current developments sweeping a number of Arab countries.

It also pointed out that Member States were all for the decision in order to ensure extensive representation of all countries, which would pave the way for issues to be discussed on a high level that would, in turn, reflect on outcomes of the summit; ones that would match aspirations of Arab peoples.

The Summit was scheduled for May 11 this year.

Zebari, at a joint press conference with Moussa, said the postponement came upon a request from his country in light of current situations witnessed by a number of Arab countries.

In a different matter, Zebari voiced his country's support for Egypt's nominee for the post of the league's chief.
