4/22/2011Torrential rains sweep N. Iraq, fatality reported
ARBIL-North Iraq, The heavy rains hitting Kurdistan region since last night left at least one person killed and rendered 50 others homeless in Sinjar city, a local official said Friday.
"The incessant rains led to massive flooding, the biggest in the area in more than ten years," deputy chief of Sinjar's municipal council Miser Hejji Saleh told reporters.
Many people are besieged by the flood and stuck at their homes and more than 100 houses were damaged, Saleh said.
He urged the Iraqi federal government to offer urgent help for the flood victims, warning of a possible disaster in the area if the rains continued for a long time.
