Senior U.S. diplomat completes visit to Iraq

WASHINGTON, The U.S. assistant secretary of state in charge of Near Eastern affairs had finished his visit to Iraq, during which he met with major leaders of the country, the State Department said in a statement Monday.

Jeffrey Feltman visited Iraq from Thursday to Sunday to discuss transition issues, the future of the U.S.-Iraqi partnership, and regional developments, said the statement.

Feltman has met with Iraq's major political leaders, including President Jalal Talabani and Prime Minister Nuri Maliki, said the statement.

He emphasized the United States' commitment to a long-term partnership with Iraq under the Strategic Framework Agreement that will broaden the emphasis on political, economic, environmental, technological and cultural cooperation.

He also discussed a number of other issues including Iraq's regional relations and political dynamics of the new Iraqi government.

According to the agreement between the U.S. and Iraq, the remaining U.S. troops in Iraq are scheduled to fully withdraw by the year-end, and the security responsibility will be handed over the Iraqi security forces.
