Arab League denies Gulf request to cancel Baghdad summit officially

Cairo, The Arab League denied on Wednesday receiving an official note from the GCC countries to cancel the Arab summit to be held in Baghdad next May.

Arab League denying comes after the Bahraini Foreign Minister, Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said in a message on "Twitter" social site on Tuesday, that the Gulf Cooperation Council demanded in a letter to the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Amro Moussa to cancel the Arab summit scheduled to take place in Iraq.

Sheikh Khalid did not mention a reason for the request, but the statement comes after Iraq criticized the security Bahraini campaign against the protests led by Shiaa

The Deputy Secretary-General of the Arab League Ambassador , Ahmed Ben Helli told reporters, including AKnews reporter that "canceling the Arab summit must be consulted with all Member States and this decision can not be taken easily."

"The Arab League heard from the media that there is a desire from the GCC countries to cancel the summit, and there is nothing official about the subject."

"The Iraqi Foreign Minister, Hoshyar Zebari will meet the Secretary-General of the Arab League on Thursday to address this issue and will be among the issues put forward, the position of the Gulf Cooperation Council."

The Summit was assumed to will be held under the chairmanship of Iraq, in 23 of March but was delayed to 29 of the same month, before being postponed to next May, because of the transformations in the Arab region in light of popular uprisings against regimes in a number of Arab countries.

Baghdad hosting the Arab summit is the biggest event in the country for nearly two decades, as about 50 thousand U.S. troops kept in the country for support missions are preparing to the final withdrawal this year.
