4/9/2011 Al-Sadr threatens Mahdi army return unless US pulls out
BAGHDAD, Leader of the Iraqi Sadrist trend Muqtada Al-Sadr threatened Saturday again to end the freeze of Mahdi army, the trend's armed wing, in case U.S. extends its military presence in Iraq, or abrogate its full military withdrawal, warning to fuel military resistance against U.S. if it chooses the second scenario.
Al-Sadr said in, an address made on his behalf by his spokesperson Sheikh Salah Al-Ubaydi within a rally held by his followers on the occasion of the 8th anniversary of Iraq's occupation, that, "if they break their promise, and do not exit Iraq, this means two options the first of them is to step up military resistance, and abolish Mahdi's army freeze."
He also said that, "the second option is to ecalate passive and popular resistance through sit-ins," adding that, "all Iraqis should join hands to evict those who are occupying the Iraqi lands."
Finally, he stressed his rejection to the U.S. military presence as well as U.S. contracting firms and militias, in a reference to the private security companies contracting with the U.S. military.
