3/6/2011 U.S. to offer Egypt USD $150 million in economic assistance
CAIRO, US Special Assistant to the Undersecretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Walles said Sunday his country has developed a financial aid package for Egypt to help bolster up its faltering economy.
These measures include assistance worth USD 150 million which will be offered soon, Walles told a meeting organized by the US Embassy here.
The Egyptian economy has been badly hit by the recent turmoil and there are many areas which need urgent help besides the help to the current process of democratic transition, he said.
The US does not make decisions on behalf of the Egyptians; it rather helps them proceed towards democratic transformation and organize free and transparent legislative and presidential polls after the referendum on the constitutional amendments, due to take place later this month, Walles made clear.
The Egyptian people faces the challenge of the crucial elections which will chart the map of their political future, he went on to say.
Commenting on Egyptian gas exports to Israel, Walles said that he did not represent Israel, noting that the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces has recently stated its commitments to the deals signed previously by Egypt.
The peace accords with Israel are of crucial importance to the security of the Middle East and the gas exports to Israel are subject to commercial arrangements, he said citing a statement made by the Egyptian military council after the ouster of president Hosni Mubarak.
Walles, now on a visit to Egypt, said he did not meet any members of the Muslim Brotherhood, adding that the US embassy is contacting the group to know about their plans for political participation.
During his stay here, he met top-level officials including members of the military council, Foreign Ministry officials, former officials, leading businesspeople, political and human rights activists and trade union leaders.
