UNITED NATIONS, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano, of Japan, discussed over the phone the situation of the nuclear reactors in Japan in the aftermath of the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit northern Japan last Friday.

Ban's acting deputy spokesman Farhan Haq also told the daily press briefing on Monday that the Secretary-General and the Director General agreed on "the importance of a summit on nuclear safety" that will take place next month in Kiev, Ukraine.

Japanese officials admitted today that a third reactor could be in partial meltdown and warned that the situation in Japan is "even worse" than in the other two stricken reactors.
