3/3/2011 Talabani arrives in Arbil to meet Barzani
Arbil, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani arrived at the Arbil International Airport Thursday to meet with Iraqi Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani to discuss current developments in Iraq and Kurdistan, according to a media source from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
“Talabani and Barzani are scheduled to hold an important meeting to exchange views on developments in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region in particular and Iraq in general,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
The opposition party in the semi-autonomous region – the Movement for Change, Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) and the Islamic Group in Kurdistan (IGK) – earlier today (March 3) announced a “reform” draft offered to the leaders of the Iraqi and Kurdistan governments, parliament and the two main Kurdish parties to have extensive political reforms in two months’ time.
The parties appealed to Barzani to call for snap elections if officials failed to respond positively to the demands mentioned in the draft during the set period.
The developments come after mass protests in the Kurdish city of Sulaimaniya on Feb. 17 calling for better services and living conditions as well as large scale political reforms.
Clashes erupted after protesters pelted a building of Barzani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) with stones, prompting the building guards to open fire on the protesters, leaving one person killed and more than 50 others wounded.
