Cairo, An official at the Arab League Tuesday that the foreign ministers of member states will hold an emergency meeting on Saturday at the university in Cairo to discuss the situation in Libya.
Ambassador Hesham Youssef, chief of the Office of the Secretary-General of the Arab League at a press conference attended by the news agency Kurdistan (Rn) that he "decided to hold an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers on Saturday under the chairmanship of the Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs of Oman, Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah."
He explained that the meeting was designed "to discuss the latest developments in Libya in light of the escalating violence," noting that "the meeting will be at the request of some Arab countries and consultations of the Secretary-General Amr Moussa, where it was agreed to hold the meeting on Saturday."
He pointed out that "the meeting will be devoted to discuss the steps to be taken to protect the Arab Libyan people, especially with regard to the possibility of imposing an air embargo on Libya."
It is said that Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari had participated last week at a meeting of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level.
The development came hours after the invitation of the GCC countries of the Arab League to take its responsibilities and take all of the Libyans would protect civilians, and held an urgent meeting of the Council of the Whole to discuss this topic.
Gulf nations have called for an urgent meeting of the Council of the Arab League to discuss this matter, as requested by Ministers from UN Security Council to "take the measures necessary for the protection of civilians, including the air embargo on Libya."
