A 8.9-magnitude earthquake has struck off Japan's north-eastern coast, shaking buildings in Tokyo for several minutes and sending people out into the streets.
Japan's meteorological agency warned that a tsunami as high as 20 feet could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture, closest to the epicentre.
The agency said the quake struck at a depth of six miles, about 80 miles off the eastern coast.
Several quakes have hit the same region in recent days, including a 8.9 magnitude tremor on Wednesday.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 struck off the coast ofJapan on Friday afternoon local time, according the UnitedStates Geological Survey.
Local Japanese television broadcast images of cars, trucksand buildings being swept away by a tsunami in Onahama cityin Fukushima prefecture, according to The Associated Press.
