Iraq ~ Oil Exports to Turkey by Next Week ...

March 12, 2011

BAGHDAD, Iraqi officials said oil exports would resume within five days after insurgents struck the country’s giant Beiji pipeline to Turkey.

Iraqi Oil Ministry spokesman Asim Jihad said armed insurgents planted a bomb on the pipeline to Turkey late Wednesday. The explosion halted oil shipments through the Beiji pipeline, which typically carries about 400,000 barrels of oil per day.

Jihad said crude shipments were closed to Turkey but stressed there was enough oil in storage to prevent major disruptions, Bloomberg News reports.

Repairs could take about three days to complete and oil should begin flowing again at some point next week, Iraqi production officials said.

Iraqi officials blamed al-Qaida for a February attack at the Beiji oil refinery north of Baghdad. The refinery is the largest in Iraq and the explosion removed about 150,000 barrels per day from the market.

Oil officials after the February attack said the national oil industry was in the rise despite the modest uptick in violence.
