Fulbright increases admissions to 85 students in Iraq

Baghdad, The spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Iraq said Sunday that the number of Iraqi participants in the "Fulbright" program increased to 85 students in 2011.

Aaron Snape told AKnews that more than 600 Iraqi students and scientists had participated in the Fulbright program since 1951, including 302 students and scholars since the program was re-established in 2004.

The "Fulbright" program which is sponsored by the Office of the Foreign Affairs Ministry for educational and cultural affairs, is a senior program of the government of the United States interested in international educational exchange and is supported by the people of the United States and partner countries in all parts of the world.

"The Iraqi government had contributed in the past year in supporting the participation by allowing the double number of students to be accepted in Fulbright program, thus confirming the importance of the United States and Iraq in the ranks of International Education."

"The Fulbright program comes at the level of cooperation in the field of educational exchanges between the United States and Iraq, as a key element in the bilateral cooperation within the strategic framework agreement between the two countries."

"The "Fulbright" program is the commitment of the U.S. government towards Iraq within the exchange of common interests," expressing his appreciation for the achievements of many Iraqi graduates who participated in the Fulbright Program in both countries over the past sixty years."

"The U.S. government will always be a committed and consistent partner with Iraq, and looks forward to continue their cooperation within the Strategic Framework Agreement".

The "Fulbright" program is enlisted within the Strategic Framework Agreement that has no specific time period within the withdrawal Convention of U.S. troops from Iraq.

"The U.S. Foreign ministry is preparing to provide additional opportunities for exchange of scientists within the Fulbright Program during the current year, and seeks to achieve common goals in order to put long-term foundations that will contribute to the growing peace, prosperity, security and stability in the Middle East."

The "Fulbright" program, and since 1946 provided for more than 300 participants in more than 155 countries, opportunities for study, teaching, research, exchange of ideas and contribute in finding solutions to international issues of common concern.

Iraq was one of the first countries to join the United States in participating in the academic experiences that contribute to the change.

The Iraqi government signed an agreement on January 2008 with the U.S. government that states on the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of 2011, where the agreement included cooperation in the strategic framework to ensure cooperation between the two countries in the fields of industry, agriculture, health, education, technology, education and culture.
