3/13/2011Ashton to inform Arab League outcome of EU summit on Libya
BRUSSELS, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, travels today to Cairo for talks with the Egyptian leadership and the Arab League, said a statement released by her office Sunday afternoon.
During her visit, the EU foreign policy chief will meet Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf, Foreign Minister Nabil El Araby and Amr Moussa, Secretary General of the Arab League.
She will debrief them on the results of Friday's Extraordinary EU summit on Libya when the EU leaders called on Muammar Gaddafi to quit at once.
Ashton will also inform them on her proposals presented earlier this week to enhance EU support to Egypt and other partner countries in the Southern Mediterranean, as they continue their process of political transformation.
She will also discuss the results of Saturday's meeting of Arab League foreign ministers who called on the UN Security Council to impose a no-fly zone on Libya.
On Monday evening, Ashton will travel on to Paris for a meeting of the G8 foreign ministers, where the main focus will also be the unfolding developments in the Southern Mediterranean, added the statement.
