3/14/2011Clinton meets UAE FM on Mideast situation
PARIS, US Secretary-of-State Hilary Clinton held here Monday evening talks with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan on the ongoing events in the Middle East region and other international issues, US State Department sources indicated.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of Group of Eight (G-8) talks that are taking place Monday night and Tuesday in the French capital.
"I am looking forward to talking with my colleague, counterpart and friend Sheikh Abdullah," Clinton said ahead of the meeting, according to the source.
The US official indicated that the talks would "include everything that is happening" but that she thought it important to meet with Sheikh Abdullah as the UAE currently presides the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
Clinton affirmed that she felt it would be "a very comprehensive discussion.
" In comments from his side, Sheikh Abdullah stressed the desire of this country to help stability and a fair solution in Bahrain and he confirmed the sending security forces to help "defuse the tension" in that Gulf country.
"We have already sent roughly 500 of our police forces, who are there," he said before meeting with Clinton in a Paris hotel.
"The Saudis are there as well. There are other Gulf countries -- to support the Bahraini government to get calm and order in Bahrain and to help both the Bahraini government and people to reach a solution which is for the best for the Bahraini people," the UAE Minister said, according to the State Department account here.
