Barzani and Talabani chair politburos joint meeting today

Erbil, The politburos of the two ruling Kurdistan parties are due to meet today to discuss early elections in the Kurdistan Region.

Massoud Barzani, the president of Kurdistan recently voiced his desire for the Kurdish government to conduct early elections, as a measure to calm down the recent public rallies in his semi-autonomous territory, northern Iraq. The protesters, who are still on streets, demand the government end corruption, initiate reform, provide better public services and create more job opportunities.

Azad Jundiani, a leader in the Iraqi President Jalal Talabani’s Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) said Tuesday’s assembly between the politburos of the PUK and Barzani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) will spotlight the proposal by Barzani for early elections.

Jundiani added the meeting will be chaired by the presidents of both parties, Barzani and Talabani. Part of the discussions will be devoted to the measures to initiate reform in the government, given the fact that the two parties have the largest share in the Kurdish parliament and hence should be of influence.

A leader from the PUK, Sadi Ahmed Pira earlier told AKnews, the two parties will reconsider in their politburo meeting the possibility of running for the early public polls under a single list.

Under a 2007 pact, the PUK and KDP who have domineered ruling in Kurdistan since 1991, should run for the elections jointly. However, the latest general voting in Kurdistan with open lists revealed the KDP has a greater public support.
