Allawi says Iraq's Government and Democracy is a Joke ...

March 7, 2011

Iyad Allawi, the leader of Iraq's cross-sectarian Iraqiya coalition, has said that power sharing in his country is a myth.

Allawi, whose bloc won the most seats in Iraq's election last year, was appointed to head a new statutory body intended to promote inclusivness, but turned the position down.

He argued the post failed to comply with a power-sharing deal that had been agreed following tortuous negotiations in the wake of the elections.

A government was eventually formed in December, following the deal, a full nine months after the election had taken place.

Al Jazeera's Rawya Rageh asked him why he withdrew from the post as head of the national security council.
