February 20, 2011Washington says interested in developing electricity sector in Iraq
BAGHDAD, The United States announced on Sunday its interest in developing the electricity sector in Iraq, whose production has been decaying, especially with the increasing demand amid deteriorating systems of electricity production in the whole country.
The US position was uttered by deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman during a meeting with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani at the latter's office today, according to a government statement.
Poneman said that his visit to Iraq came in the context of the US government's keenness to deepen communication with Iraq in the core issues related to energy, referring to the interest of the United States to support Iraqi efforts to develop the electricity, oil and gas sectors in the country.
Poneman stressed that his country is determined to move forward in supporting the Iraqi people and their democratic aspirations in the achievement of stability, development and prosperity.
For his part, Talabani said that the Iraqi government was determined to develop its relations with friendly countries, including the United States, in vital areas, particularly the areas of economy, energy, to serve the development process in Iraq.
Talabani stressed the importance of contribution of American companies in the development of the energy sector in Iraq and take advantage of the expertise and potential of these companies in this area, so as to ensure mutual benefit for both sides.
