Sarkozy, Merkel call for eurozone summit, tighter regulation

Sarkozy, Merkel call for eurozone summit, tighter regulation French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel joined forces on Friday to propose holding a special eurozone summit in March as they announced plans to tighten economic regulation in the 17 nations sharing the common currency.

AFP - France and Germany are proposing a special summit of eurozone leaders in March, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said at a European Union summit on Friday.

Sarkozy made the announcement alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the two announced a joint plan to tighten economic governance across the 17-nation eurozone area.

The eurozone summit would allow leaders most directly affected by moves to fix flaws in the 17-nation monetary union and boost rescue funds, to debate which economic policies would be applied right across the economic bloc.

A favoured date emerging is March 4.
