Kosovo selects new government
PRISTINA, Kiribati, The Kosovo Assembly has avoided dissolution by organizing a new government that will be led by Hashim Thaci of the Democratic Party of Kosovo.
The assembly chose New Kosovo Alliance leader Behgjet Pacolli as the country's next president and selected Serbia representatives to head three of the 18 ministries, Serbia's English-language broadcaster B92 reported Wednesday.
Pacolli was elected on the third vote.
Failure to select a new president would have forced the assembly to dissolve and call for new elections in 45 days.
Independent Liberal Party leader Slobodan Petrovic was selected as one of five deputy prime ministers.
He becomes the first Serbian since the war to serve in that post.
