Iraqi speaker calls for early provincial elections
Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament Osama Al-Nujaifi called here Sunday for early provincial elections in light of the recent protests which occurred in several Iraqi cities.
Al-Nuaijfi told the press that he met with the parliament's council and agreed on holding a parliamentary session next week to discuss the issue, adding that several MPs had expressed their approval of such meeting during unofficial meetings.
He noted that such elections should be held within the period of the upcoming three to four months to allow people to elect members of provincial councils that they desire. The last such election was held in Iraq back in January 2009.
