Iraqi Pres. warns against plots of destabilizing regime, supports Maliki
BAGHDAD, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani warned Monday of attempts made for destabilizing the country's political regime, saying that it is the spinoff a bitter struggle by the Iraqi people.
He also expressed his solidarity with the call made by Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki to give his government 100 days to evaluate its performance before making any change.
Further, Talabani said in a presidential statement circulated late today on the protests that came out of more than 10 Iraqi cities, "the protests of last Friday saw acts of violence instigated by those who tried to take advantage of the popular demonstrations with the aim of destabilizing the political regime." He added that such schemes were thwarted thanks to the concerted efforts of the security forces, and a number of demonstrators who showed a high degree of awareness and discipline.
The Iraqi President stressed that, "any transgression of law is strongly condemned, and any breach of security is a violation of the law that ensure peaceful demonstrations provided that they do not violate legislations." Talabani added that "if staging protests is a legitimate right enshrined in the constitution, the attempts to destabilize the democratic regime cannot be accepted," stressing that "power in our country is rotated through the popular will represented by the general elections, and through the ballot boxes."
He also deplored the fall of victims during the protests, saying that, "if security troops are committed to shouldering their duties on keeping security, they should at the same time avoid any thing that may jeopardizes the lives of citizens," calling for holding a probe to know and take to task those who did not fulfil their duties.
Further, Talabani stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of journalists, and the freedom of media as a key vehicle of communication between the power and society.
Talabani also said that, "power in our democratic society should listen to the people, and fulfil their legitimate demands.
Finally, he expressed his support to Al-Maliki who asked for a 100-day deadline for evaluating the performance of his government before making any change, saying, "we support the appeal made by Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki for setting a 100-day deadline in order to address current problems, and take to taks any official who is proved negligent or underachiever."
