February 14, 2011Maliki Appoints 8 More Ministers
Prime Minister Maliki has appointed eight new ministers. All eight have been approved by parliament. Key posts such as ministers of power, trade and interior have been filled. Maliki is systematically filling out members of his cabinet to insure Iraq has a stable government that can lead the country forward. Iraq is still in a position of uncertainty, but Maliki's appointment of key cabinet members is very encouraging.
The new power minister, Raad Shallal is in a very important position as most Iraqis do not have reliable electricity. Currently Iraq is 5,000 megawatts short of demand. However, Iraq has made it a priority to provide consistent power and has launched a plan to give Iraqi citizens 1,000 kilowatt-hours of free power each month.
Reliable electricity is a basic infrastructure improvement that will have a huge, positive impact in Iraq. Citizens will become more confident in the government for delivering its promises, daily life will become more comfortable and small businesses will become more productive. Local businesses will be able to have longer hours, more efficient equipment and improve customer experience.
The dinar could also reap in positive benefits from reliable electricity. Economically, small businesses will be healthier. More and more dinars will be exchanged for transactions. However, the dinar will gain more from the political victory of reliable electricity.
Iraq has been plagued by a failure to follow through with its infrastructure projects. Violent protests broke out last summer because of unreliable power, resulting in the resignation of the power minister. If Iraq can deliver electricity to its citizens, Iraqis will be more confident in the democratic process and its own government.
As Iraqis become more confident in the government, so will the international community. A healthy relationship between the government and its citizens is the most important factor for a stable country.

Iraq needs more political stability for the dinar to increase in value.
Stability decreases the perception of risk in the dinar. More and more foreign companies will invest in Iraq and the flow of dinars will be more widespread.
This is necessary for the dinar to be openly traded as a currency pair on the foreign exchanges. The new power minister has a huge opportunity to push Iraq and the dinar to another level.
