Emirates begins flights to Basra to expand economic horizons
Basra, UAE’s Emirates airline made its first entry into Iraq Wednesday afternoon when an airbus A330 passenger plane landed in Basra International Airport to expand its economic horizons.
Emirates increased its destinations to 110 after deciding to operate Dubai-Basra flights to Basra International Airport.
“Iraq is witnessing an economic growth... The potentials available in Basra are important," The airline company said in a statement.
Emirates had announced in May plans to operate flights to the Iraqi capital Baghdad as well in July 2010 but the line had not been opened yet.
“UAE investment in the province just started today with the landing of the first Emirates airline” said Basra province governor Shiltagh Abboud.
“The landing of this plane means the arrival of investment opportunities” said head of Basra Provincial Council Jabbar Amin Jaber, “We urge other international aviation companies to make entry into Basra”
The airline operator has also opened an office in the city of Basra and a sales manager has already been appointed.
Four flights per week will be operated by Emirates by an Airbus A330 to Basra, in addition to 130 tons of cargo transport service per month.
