Counterfeit iPods, iPhones found at port bust

LA (KABC) - Two brothers were arrested in a massive bust where police seized millions of dollars in stolen goods and counterfeit electronics that came through the Port of Los Angeles.

Edward Zahab, 40, and Bahram Zahab, 45, are accused of orchestrating the counterfeit ring, which included products made to look like authentic high-end Apple merchandise with a street value of more than $2 million.

Port police said the shipments came in from Asia through the Port of Los Angeles, but the actual bust was made in downtown Los Angeles, where several locations were being used to package the items that were then intended to be sold at discounted prices.

Port of L.A. Police Chief Ronald Boyd said a multi-agency approach to security helped uncover the goods.

"We have a very layered approach between the federal, state and local agencies, if it's not interdicted by Customs and Border Protection, and they do a tremedous job of looking for counterfeit and trademark violations," said Boyd.

Officials said the two men were charged with several felonies related to counterfeit goods.

Police emphasized that the bust serves as a reminder to consumers looking for high-end electronics. They need to be leery of who they're buying from and how deep the discount is.

"It's the old adage, 'If it's too good to be true, it probably is.' We really want to enforce the fact that people should really take a look at going through mainstream outlets and doing everything they can to double and triple check to make sure they protect themselves," said Boyd.

Port police said the case was still under investigation and said additional suspects may be named in the coming days or weeks.
