Arab League regrets US veto of UN resolution on Israeli settlements

CAIRO, The Arab League on Sunday expressed extreme condemnation of the US use of its right to veto against a UN Security Council draft resolution condemning Israel's illegal building of settlements on occupied Palestinian lands.

"This position clearly illustrates opposition to the will of the international community - which opposes the Israeli settlement policy - backed by a 14-nation-supported draft resolution within the UNSC, and adopted by over 130 UN member countries," an Arab League General Secretariat statement read.

"This negative stance offers protection of the continuation of the settlement policy taken out against occupied Palestinian lands - including Jerusalem - undermining efforts to attain peace and establish an independent Palestinian state, with a capital of East Jerusalem."

"The use of the right to veto represents a dangerous defiance of the principles and foundations the peace process is based on, and a stark contradiction to US-announced positions on the illegitimacy of Israeli settlements," the statement concluded.
