Sunday, January 9th 2011 Parliament passes bill permitting 3 Vice Presidents
Baghdad, The Iraqi parliament passed a law on Sunday that allows the appointment of three vice presidents instead of the two previously permitted.
The parliament passed the law that allows three deputies for the president and that also gives parliament the power to question the president.
The law stipulates that the Vice Presidents must have university degrees.
According to reports, it is not completely clear who would take the third position as Vice President after Tariq al-Hashemi of the al-Iraqiya list and Adel Abdul Mahdi of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI).
Iraq’s Turkmen have been persistent in their demand for one of the Vice President positions but larger groups view those positions as their rightful allocation in accordance with prior political agreements.
For his part, President Jalal Talabani has expressed his support for a Turkman candidate to be his third deputy.
