Wednesday, January 12th 2011National Coalition Dep. Hails Kuwaiti PM’s Visit As A Sign of Renewed Hope ...
Baghdad, A National coalition (NC) deputy said on Wednesday that the visit of Kuwaiti Prime Minister, Nasser Al-Ahmad Al-Subah, and his accompanying delegation to Iraq gives renewed hope to the solution of outstanding issues that remain between the two countries.
Ibrahim al-Rekabi told AKnews he was optimistic that issues such as the demarcation of common borders between the two countries and outstanding compensation payments due following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 could now be resolved.
The Kuwaiti PM Nasser al-Ahmed al-Subah arrived in Baghdad this morning heading a delegation of officials to meet with Iraqi leaders.
The Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Mohammad Sabah Salem said during a press conference following the meetings that Kuwait remains supportive of Iraq, praising the recent government formation and the UN resolutions that removed Iraq from its chapter 7 status (listing the country as an international security threat).
Salem added that the two sides have agreed to hold talks following the Arab Summit in Baghdad in March, adding that Kuwait strongly supports Baghdad’s bid to host the forthcoming conference of Arab leaders.
“We will try to remove all obstacles between the two sides,” he said.
After Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, several disputes remain unsettled between the two countries, particularly the issue of border demarcation as defined by the UN Resolution No. 833 of 1993.
The Iraqi government agreed with Kuwait on November 24 last year to establish a 500 meter-wide isolated zone on both sides of the border between the two countries.
