Iran: Iraq model of democracy in ME

Iranian caretaker Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says Iraq is regarded as a model of democracy in the Middle East, stressing that the country has been successful in promoting pluralism, Press TV reported.

"Although different tribes in Iraq express various views, Iraqi people and officials have succeeded in promoting pluralism in the country and displaying a new method for the establishment of a new government by holding talks and positive interactions," IRNA quoted Salehi as speaking in a joint press conference with Ammar Hakim, head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI), in Baghdad on Wednesday.

The Iranian official added that the Iraqi nation displayed a model of freedom to the world.

Hakim, for his part, pointed to political, religious and ethnic diversity in Iraq and praised the role of Iraqi people in establishing a new independent government.

He expressed optimism that unity among the Iraqi nation would bring political and economic stability to the country.

Meanwhile, in a meeting with the ISCI head on the same day, the Iranian Foreign Ministry caretaker called for removing visa requirements for nationals of Iran and Iraq.

"It is necessary to remove visa requirements for Iranian and Iraqi nationals at the earliest with regard to the two nations' willingness to travel to both countries," said Salehi, noting the common religious and historical bonds the people of both countries enjoy.

He also stressed the importans between Iran and Iraq, particularly in economic fields.

"The resolve among the people and officials of the two countries can influence enhanced ties and growing commercial exchanges," he further explained.

Referring to ongoing challenges in Iraq, the Iranian official urged all states neighboring Iraq to help the country retain its dignity.

Hakim said Iran and Iraq should not limit ties merely to political issues and urged the two countries to boost relations in the fields of economy, culture and communications.

He also pointed out that all attempts by certain countries to damage Tehran-Baghdad ties have failed.
