200,000 police to be recruited for Baghdad
The deputy Iraqi interior minister said the Iraqi Council of Ministers has agreed to recruit 200,000 policemen and interior ministry staff for better protecting Baghdad province.
Hussein Kamal told AKnews Thursday the new force will be deployed in Baghdad upon the ratification of the Iraqi general budget. The force will approximately double the number of the current police service in the province, according to Kamal.
The general budget of the country for 2011 is estimated to be around 78.969 billion U.S. Dollars, up from $71 billion in 2010. However, the fund is yet to be ratified by parliament.
The Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki stated stabilizing the Iraqi security situation is among his first top work priorities.
The Iraqi official warned though the security services in Baghdad have tighten the measures to reduce the violations and insurgency, Iraq is facing a “new threat” the rise in the use of silenced guns for assassinations.
Kamal pointed the finger at the neighboring countries, accusing them of “smuggling the prohibited guns into Iraq through the border points.”
