Eyes are on this evening to New York where the UN Security Council will hold a special session on ways to consider removing Iraq from Chapter VII.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Osama Nujaifi announced during a meeting with the President of the United Nations mission in Iraq, Ad Melkert (UNAMI) earlier this week, the increase in a state of anger in the Iraqi street as a result of the continued imposition of Chapter VII of the country.
It is worth mentioning that the United States pledged in accordance with the Convention on the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and the organization of its activities during its temporary presence in it, on measures to terminate the application of Chapter VII to Iraq.

"Recognizing the right of the Government of Iraq not to request renewal of the mandate and authority granted to the multinational forces under Chapter VII, contained in UN Security Council resolution No. 1790 (2007), a mandate which expires on December 31 2008.
And referring to the letters to the UN Security Council, annexed to Resolution No. 1790: letter from the Prime Minister of Iraq and a letter from the Secretary of State in the United States on 7 and December 10, 2007, respectively, which are annexed to Resolution 1790; and a reference to Part III of the Declaration of Principles on the relationship of cooperation and a long friendship term, which was signed by the President of the Republic of the United States and the Prime Minister of Iraq on November 26, 2007, which scored for Iraq's call to extend the mandate referred to above for a final term expiring on a date not later than December 31 2008.
In recognition as well as dramatic and positive developments in Iraq, a reminder that the situation in Iraq is fundamentally different from the situation which existed when the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 661 in 1990, especially that the danger was posed by the Government of Iraq to international peace and security is gone:
The parties confirm In this regard, that with the end of business on December 31, 2008 the mandate and authority granted to the multinational forces under Chapter VII, contained in UN Security Council resolution 1790 (2007), should return to Iraq, legal and international standing which he enjoyed before the adoption of UN Security Council resolution No. 661 (1990), and confirm also that the United States must help Iraq to take the necessary steps to achieve this by December 31 of 2008."
