12/17/2010Iraqi leaders press for early formation of cabinet
BAGHDAD, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Prime Minister-designate Nouri Al-Maliki agreed Friday evening to step up efforts to form a new government within the constitution-set span.
Talabani received Al-Maliki at his office here to discuss the progress of the talks among the major political parties on the cabinet formation, according to a Presidential Office statement of which KUNA received a copy.
The meeting reviewed the political, economic, security and social landscapes in the country as well as regional and international issues.
The two leaders hailed the recent UN Security Council resolution cancelling the sanctions imposed on the country during the era of deposed president Saddam Hussein under Charter VII of the UN Charter in the wake of Iraqi invasion of neighborly Kuwait.
They thanked all countries that helped rid Iraq of the sanctions and promised to strengthen Iraq's relations with all neighbors as well as all friendly countries worldwide, the statement revealed.
On November 25 Talabani tasked Al-Maliki with forming a new government in coordination with the political blocs represented at the Council of Representatives.
