Egyptian minister arrives in Erbil to open consulate
Sulaimaniya, Dec.26 (AKnews)- A source from the Iraqi presidential office said Saturday the Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abulghayti will arrive in the Kurdistan Region Sunday and opens his country’s representative office in Erbil, the Region’s capital.
The source told AKnews the minister will arrive at Sulaimaniya International Airport 18:00 local time and will meet with the Iraqi President Jalal Talabani in Sulaimaniya, eastern Kurdistan Region. Abulghayti will then head to Erbil to meet with the Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani and officially launch the Egyptian consulate office in the Kurdish capital.
Kawa Mahmoud, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)’s spokesman confirmed the news.
Thought the Egytian consul to Erbil took office mid November but his office is yet to be officially opened. Egypt is the first Arab country to open representation in Kurdistan.
The Arab country is seeking to open another office in Basra province, southern Iraq. It already has an Embassy in Baghdad and two consulates in the Iraqi and Kurdish capitals.
Some 18 countries have representation in Kurdistan and reportedly the number is expected to rise.
