Egypt seeking to expand commercial interests in Iraq and settle debts
Baghdad, Egypt is seeking to expand its commercial interests in Iraq through opening a consulate in Erbil city, and to reach a settlement of debts owed by Iraq to Egypt.
Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit says Iraq is "seriously working" with the Egyptian government to settle debts owed by Iraq after his country announced plans to open a consulate in Erbil city.
Abul Gheit arrived in Baghdad Sunday in what became the first Arab leader’s Iraq visit after the formation of the government to talk with government officials to deepen bilateral relations, after Maliki visited Egypt in October to win Arab support of his new government.
“Egypt is committed to help Iraq to overcome all the difficulties and obstacles faced in the past," The Egyptian FM said in a joint press conference with Iraqi Foreign Mnister Hoshyar Zebari in Baghdad.
According to the Egyptian estimates, the debt owed by Iraq is US$2 billion, including the compensations and interest rates of the companies and individuals affected by Iraq's Kuwait invasion in 1990 and the following wars.
Egypt is eying a more active role in Iraq through increasing trade exchange volume, and having a greater presence of its companies in the country.
Zebari urged Egyptian investment in Iraq especially in "electricity sector"
Abul Gheit is expected to fly to Kurdistan Region after the Baghdad visit to officially open his country's consulate in Erbil to become the first Arab country to open its consulate in the Kurdish region.
He is expected to meet Iraqi President Jalal Talabani in Sulaimaniyah city, and the President of Kurdistan Region Massoud Barzani in Erbil.
