BAGHDAD, Iraqi political leaders came close here Wednesday to compromises that may lead to carving out the new government.
Some sources close to the ongoing negotiations revealed the distribution of higher posts in the country among the outgoing Prime Minister and the Iraqi National Alliance candidate for another term Nouri Al-Maliki, the leader of Iraqi List Iyad Allawi and head of the republic and the Kurdistan Alliance candidate for another presidential term Jalal Talabani.
A source close to the negotiations -- who spoke to KUNA on the condition of annonymity -- said that it was agreed that Nouri Al-Maliki will have the premiership for another term, while leader of Iraqi List Iyad Allawi will preside over the National Council for Strategic Studies with the presidency going to the candidate of Kurdistan Alliance Jalal Talabani.
The source said this briefly following the start of a meeting by the leaders of Iraqi political blocs this evening at the house of Kurdistan region governor Masud Barzani in the Green Zone in Baghdad within the latter's initiative for resolving the crisis of government's formation and in the presence of leader of the Iraqi List leader Iyad Allawi.
The meeting was also attended by leader within the Iraqi List Saleh Al-Mutlaq who was excluded from participating in the elections due to the measures adopted by the Accountability and Justice Commission, while some sources said that Al-Mutlaq held a side meeting with outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki that was later joined by another leader in the Iraqi List Mohammad Allawi.
However, according to the same source, the dialogue continues on naming the parliament's speaker with many prominent figures on the table, foremost among them is the outgoing parliament speaker Iyad Al-Samarrai, candidate of the Centrist Alliance for the post.
Though Al-Samarrai's naming depends on his most prominent adversary Osama Al-Najafi's getting a sovereign post whether being the parliament's speaker or the foreign minister, a position which is also coveted by head of the national dialogue within the Iraqi List Saleh Mutlaq.
