EU Parliament appeals to political parties in Iraq to rapidly form new gov't ...
BRUSSELS, The European Parliament has expressed concern over the recent rise of violent terrorist attacks in Iraq and called for the swift formation of a non-sectarian government in the country.
"The continued failure to form a government almost 8 months after the Iraqi elections has provided a vacuum which the men of violence are quick to fill," said the Chair of the EP Delegation for Relations with Iraq, Struan Stevenson, in a statement here today.
"We urge an end to the stalemate and appeal to all political entities in Iraq to increase further their efforts for the rapid formation of a non-sectarian government of national unity that embraces and represents all factions in Iraqi society," said the British MEP.
"The people of Iraq have suffered greatly, they deserve peace and look to their political leaders to resolve their differences and restore stability, freedom and the rule of law to their beleaguered nation. We offer all our support in helping them to achieve these objectives", he added.
