Talabani, Al-Maliki see stalled gov't formation harmful to country's high interests

BAGHDAD, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and incumbent premier Nouri Al-Maliki on Friday said that the stalled process of government formation would harm the country's high interests.

Their remarks came after both held a meeting at the Presidential Palace, with Senior Presidential Advisor Fakhri Karim attending.

According to a presidential statement, both men discussed Iraq's political scene in light of recent developments.

"President Talabani and Premier Al-Maliki also underlined significance to take serious steps in order to bridge gaps and eradicate obstacles hindering formation of a government," the statement added.

Both leaders stressed necessity to cite a mechanism agreeable by all parties, so as to complete constitutional phases in the path of forming a government and not waste more time on the matter, said the statement.

During the meeting, Al-Maliki briefed Talabani with outcomes of his recent visit to Syria, during which he met with President Bashar Al-Assad and senior officials.

The Talabani-Maliki meeting comes a week after the latter reaffirmed that his party of the State of Law coalition supports Talabani's second term in office.

In the wake of March, 2010 parliamentary elections, four alliances came forward, but none of them succeeded in having 163 chairs to establish a new government in Iraq.

Ayad Allawi's Iraqia List won 91 seats, while Al-Maliki's bloc won 89 seats in Iraq's 325-seat parliament.

Negotiations between Iraqi blocs over forming a new government have yet to be successful since the March elections.
