Parliament speaker calls on Iraqi lawmakers to reconvene Tuesday
Baghdad, The Iraqi Speaker of Parliament announced on Wednesday evening that the next parliamentary meeting will be on Tuesday and called on all political blocs to attend the session.
Fuad Masoum said in a statement to AKnews that he was calling on parliament to reconvene in accordance with Sunday’s Federal court ruling to close the unconcluded June session.
The Iraqi Parliament convened on June 14 when the elected members swore their oaths of office.
The first and only meeting of Iraqi lawmakers in the house since the inconclusive March elections was disbanded after just 20 minutes and declared “open but unattended” allowing lawmakers more time to nominate the leadership and select a new speaker and president.
The Federal Court declared on Sunday that this move “violated the constitution” and ordered the current parliament speaker to call members back.
According to article 76 of the constitution, parliament will be considered disbanded if it fails to convene for thirty days.
For the past seven months Iraq has been in the grip of a constitutional crisis as political leaders have remained unable to reach agreement over the formation of the new government, particularly the allocation of the country’s premiership.
