Iraq - Allawi: No Longer Possible to Rely on U.S.

PNA - Ayad Allawi, a former prime minister and leader of the largest political bloc in parliament, said "It is no longer possible to rely on the United States to restore life to an experiment that bore more mistakes than real promises to build a modern, vital and democratic Iraqi state."

Allawi, who has seen his chances to become the next prime minister all but vanish, said that Nouri al-Maliki is likely to form a new government with the help of the Kurds.

Indeed, a spokesman for the Kurdish Alliance declared yesterday that al-Maliki has offered the Kurds "additional points" to the 19 points, or demands, that they presented during their initial negotiation with him.

Although the leaders of the four major blocs are due to meet in Erbil today, it appears to be a foregone conclusion that the Kurds will cast their decisive votes in favor of al-Maliki rather than Allawi.
