Ban strongly condemns today''s attack in Najaf on UN convoy, won''t be deterred

UNITED NATIONS, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday "strongly condemned" the terrorist attack earlier in the day in Najaf, Iraq, on a UN convoy carrying his Special Representative, Ad Melkert and staff of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), and insisted that it will not deter the UN from completing its work in the country, his press office said in a statement distributed here.

Ban expressed his "appreciation to his Special Representative and the UNAMI staff who are working under difficult circumstances to implement the mandate of the United Nations in Iraq. This attack will not deter the UN from continuing its efforts to assist the Iraqi people on their path to reconciliation and prosperity," the statement said.

All UN staff were not hurt in the attack. However, one member of the Iraqi security forces was killed and several others were injured. Ban sent his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

Melkert, a Dutch national appointed as special representative for Iraq in 2009. was in Najaf to meet Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani, Iraq's most revered Shia cleric.
