Iraq's neighbours meet in Manama to discuss security cooperation

Manama, Bahrain - Delegations from seven countries neighbouring Iraq began two days of talks in Manama on Sunday, focussing on extending security cooperation and helping support any future government in Baghdad.

Iranian and Turkish officials joined interior ministry officials from Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Bahrain in the closed session's meetings, expected to continue until Monday.

Interior ministers from the seven are due to meet on Wednesday.

'Without any doubt the ministers of the interior will be discussing how to best extend support to Iraqi government,' Bahrain ambassador to Iraq, Salah al Maliki said when asked about if new security frameworks were being discussed in light of the recent US troops' withdrawal.

Iran's Deputy Interior Minister for Security and Law Enforcement Affairs, Ali Abdollahi, told reporters that his country presented proposals regarding better border control mechanisms - both at land and sea.

He also said that that his country was proposing mechanisms to strengthen cooperation with neighboring countries in areas of combating terrorism, smuggling, organized crime, and human trafficking.

'Iran has always been among the countries favoring stability and security in Iraq and has made abundant efforts in this regard,' Abdollahi was quoted saying by Fars.

Iraq has faced political stalemate since inconclusive parliamentary elections in March.

The Head of Public Security at the Bahraini Ministry of Interior, Major General Tariq Mubarak bin Daina, who chaired the opening session emphasized the importance of the meeting in expressing support for the Iraqi government.

He also reaffirmed the participants' commitment to Iraq's unity, sovereignty, and its Arab and Islamic identity.
